Ambient heritage stories

Situated on the edge of Manchester’s Northern Quarter where it meets Ancoats, Band on the Wall has been at the heart of Manchester’s music culture for decades. Its name dates back to the building’s days as The George and Dragon pub in the early 20th century, when house musicians literally played on a stage halfway up the back wall to make room in the packed pub—earning the nickname ‘Band on the Wall’.

Known for hosting the finest jazz, folk, blues, and international music, the venue also played a pivotal role in Manchester’s post-punk scene, with early gigs from Buzzcocks, The Fall, and Joy Division. Today, Band on the Wall continues to present an internationally acclaimed live music programme.

Following a major refurbishment, Band on the Wall reopened in 2023 with a multi-screen ambient animation celebrating Manchester’s rich musical heritage playing continuously on three massive display screens set into the building’s exterior to engage passers-by. Produced for Band on the Wall by Assorted Images and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the movie was directed by Malcolm Garrett with animation by Joel Hepworth.

The redevelopment confirmed Band on the Wall as one of the UK’s best showcase venues of its scale, with the addition of purpose-built education spaces—including rehearsal rooms, studios, and a large communal music-making area—reflecting its mission to celebrate the UK’s diverse communities and connect globally through music.
